Five must-watch medical dramas for fans of 'ER'

'The Pitt' is back for another season.

Long before the current crop of hospital shows, “ER” revolutionised television with its lightning-fast pace and raw realism.

The groundbreaking series burst onto the scene in 1994, turning the chaotic halls of County General into a weekly appointment for millions of viewers.

While the medical jargon and high-stakes trauma were the main draw, let’s not forget the undeniable charm of a young George Clooney, who had ladies everywhere swooning over Dr Doug Ross.

With all 15 seasons finally arriving on Netflix, fans can now take a walk down memory lane while a new generation discovers exactly why this show set the benchmark for the genre.

If you have already lived through all 331 episodes and are craving that same high-stakes intensity with a modern twist, these five series are the perfect successors to sink your teeth into.

The Pitt

Right at the top of my list is “The Pitt,” an award-winning series that captures the spiritual energy of “ER” better than any other modern drama.

It is a high-octane look at a busy urban emergency room where the pacing is relentless, and the stakes are life-or-death in every frame.

Viewers are hooked because it balances cutting-edge medical realism with the sheer grit of the doctors on the front lines.

With Season 2 having just dropped in January, there is no better time to get obsessed.

The Good Doctor

Another one of my favourites, “The Good Doctor”, offers a unique perspective by following Dr Shaun Murphy, a surgical resident with autism and savant syndrome.

The show is beloved because it explores how a different way of thinking can lead to brilliant medical breakthroughs, all while Shaun navigates a world that doesn't always understand him.

It is a deeply emotional series that focuses on empathy and the human connection behind the scrubs.

New Amsterdam

In “New Amsterdam,” we follow Dr Max Goodwin, an idealistic medical director whose catchphrase, "How can I help?" drives every episode.

It is an admirable look at a doctor trying to fix a broken system from the inside, highlighting how bureaucracy often fails the patients who need help the most.

If you enjoy stories about underdogs fighting for the "little guy" against massive institutions, this is a must-watch.

House

If you prefer your medical drama with a side of mystery, “House” is essential viewing.

Dr Gregory House is a cynical, pill-popping genius who treats patients like puzzles, famously operating under the mantra that “everyone lies.”

With eight seasons of intricate, “medical detective” storytelling, it remains popular for its sharp wit and the intellectual thrill of solving cases that no other doctor can figure out.

Scrubs

Sometimes the intensity of the “ER” needs to be balanced with a touch of humour, which is where “Scrubs” shines.

While it is a comedy, it is often cited by real doctors as one of the most accurate depictions of residency.

It follows J.D. and his friends through the absurdities of hospital life, using surreal daydreams and slapstick to cope with the very real heartbreaks that come with the job.

Excitingly, the show has just been revived for a tenth season this month, bringing the original cast back to Sacred Heart to mentor a new generation.

A personal side note: Now I'm sure some are wondering why “Grey's Anatomy” isn't on this list. Well, that's because I consider it to be more of a soapie where the medical aspect is a mere backdrop, whereas these picks keep the medicine front and centre.
