I love a good horror movie or series, and anyone who has watched a lot of this genre knows that it takes a lot in 2026 to truly scare audiences.

That’s why these days, it’s a far more achievable goal to create an engrossing, creepy atmosphere with the odd jump scare thrown in. And Netflix’s “Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen” certainly achieves this, despite it’s rather average title.

It interweaves the traditional wedding nerves trope with a true sense of foreboding with expert use of lighting and eery soundtrack as the bride-to-be is convinced there are dark forces at work which will result in her death on her big day. It's also a series produced by the Duffer brothers who are best known as the minds behind the mega-hit Stranger Things

That’s not really a spoiler as the series opens with a premonition of what may come to pass.

A Mind-Bending Horror Series: Rachel’s Soulmate Dilemma

In fact, the start of this series is by far its strongest element as we experience the narrative through Rachel (played by Camila Morrone) who is travelling with her fiancé Nicky (played by Adam DiMarco) to first meet his family at their ‘summer cabin’ and then have their wedding a few days later after presumably getting to know each other.

It turns out Nicky’s family is extremely large and wealthy, as the cabin turns out to be a massive property closer to a mansion than a cabin in the woods. Except that the home is still very much in the middle of the woods, which adds to Rachel’s growing sense of dread throughout.

The couple arrives late at night in the middle of winter, and there certainly doesn’t seem to be much life around in this setting. It initially appears that no one is home until Rachel meets Nicky’s siblings in the kitchen, and they promptly tell her a scary story about Mr Sorry involving one of the siblings (Jules played by Jeff Wilbusch) as he experienced it as a child.

The best thing about the plot though is that in order for Rachel to survive her wedding day and not die with this curse that seems to have doomed her, is that if she is indeed tying the knot with her soulmate - she will live.

Sounds simple? But if Nicky is not her true soulmate, then it will condemn her to death. The story of their meeting also makes it sound like it was engineered by fate, until a few episodes in reveal that may not be the case.

Overall, this is a well-crafted horror series with eight episodes that is certainly worth the watch if you fancy a quite original horror story that doesn’t quite rely on the paranormal scares as much as the terrifying series like The Haunting of Hill House, but something a bit more subtle and mind-bending when you really dig in.
