Netflix has finally released "Love and Wine," which has, quite surprisingly, been met with excitement and a shift in opinion from fans, despite an earlier backlash and claims of copied storylines.
Mzansi was initially quick to criticise the movie before watching it because the story plot, as presented in the trailer, seemed to resemble that of the Brazilian film 'Rich in Love', which follows a similar storyline involving a wealthy heir who hides his identity to win over a love interest.
Upon its release, the film was instantly recognised by fans as being a masterpiece, with many already hailing it as the top movie for the Christmas season.
The plot centres on Owethu Sikeba, played by Ntobeko Sishi, the heir to a wine empire, who makes a bet with his best friend, Nathi, to swap lives and prove his romantic success is not tied to his wealth.
With Nathi's identity, he assumes a man whose mother works as a housekeeper in his friend’s household. He even takes on an internship, setting the stage for a romantic test of character, but things take a great turn when he falls in love with Amahle, played by Masali Baduza, whom he faked his identity.
Owethu and his girlfriend's captivating portrayal of their characters elevated the movie's romance, successfully diverting the audience's attention from the conventional plot. Their exceptional on-screen chemistry and performance were the key elements that brought the film to life.
TikTok comments praised the film as a masterpiece, with many already hailing it as a top movie. “I would like to watch it again for the first time coz wowww😩😩😩emotions got the best of me towards the end.”
Other supporting actors, including Thando Thabethe, Masali Baduza, and Thandolwethu Zondi, also delivered exceptional performances and got credit from fans for their acting, which delighted fans and contributed significantly to the movie's success.
A fan, NaeCharlene, praised Thabethe for her role, "Thando Thabethe nailed her role as Lena, she was hilarious 😂😂, loved the movie ❤️🔥."
Despite its popularity, the film is expected to receive negative feedback and divide audiences, as is common with any movie release. Although the storyline and plots are still the same, thanks to the efforts of actors to bring the movie to life, only a few fans still complained about finding similarities between the film and 'Rich in Love.'
