Sykes shares terrifying Johannesburg hijacking experience and says he is 'lucky to be alive'

Amapiano artist Sykes has shared a chilling update of how he was attacked during an alleged attempted hijacking in Johannesburg, revealing that he was stabbed after resisting the suspects.

The “uMA weNGANE” hitmaker took to Instagram Stories in a post that has since been deleted, where he opened up about the terrifying incident and warned others to stay alert on the road.

“Got my fair share of Jozi’s dangerous streets. They tried taking my car from me, and when I resisted, they stabbed me, lucky to be alive. Please lock your doors when you’re on the road, you never know when such things will happen,” he wrote.

The singer also reportedly posted a video showing the aftermath of the attack, where he appeared injured while sitting in a wheelchair.

Sykes also shared a picture of his black Mercedes-Benz following the incident with the caption: “I almost lost you, buddy.”

While further details surrounding the incident remain unclear, the post sparked concern among fans, many relieved that the artist survived the ordeal.

The incident once again highlights the reality of violent crime in South Africa, where even public figures are not spared from attacks.

Over the years, several well-known personalities have either lost their lives or survived traumatic encounters linked to crime.

Back in 2025, producer Jazzworx, whose real name is Kamohelo Monese, also spoke out after he and fellow artist GL Ceejay were kidnapped during a violent home invasion.

At the time, Jazzworx shared that the attack left them emotionally shaken after intruders stole equipment containing years of music, memories and creative work.

“Even in your home, you’re not safe,” he said while reflecting on the trauma.
