In the IsiXhosa culture, Xhosa people have different rites of passage as part of their traditions. One of the most important is Ulwaluko (initiation training).
Then Umgidi comes into play. It is a deeply meaningful homecoming celebration held when a young man returns home after initiation. It marks his transition into manhood and is a moment of pride, reflection and community.
Traditionally, the focus has often been on the initiate and the men guiding the process, but behind every successful Umgidi is a mother who has carried the emotional weight of the journey.
That is the heart of “Mgidi Moms”, a new reality series set to air on Mzansi Magic, hosted by award-winning presenter Moshe Ndiki. The show places mothers at the centre of the Umgidi experience, following them as they prepare for one of the most important milestones in their sons’ lives.
Each episode introduces viewers to a different "zibazana" (the mother of an initiate), and documents her journey from the early stages of planning through to the emotional homecoming.
From organising ceremonies and family gatherings to navigating nerves, expectations and pride, “Mgidi Moms” offers an intimate look at motherhood during this sacred time.
While some families go all out with large celebrations, others choose a more traditional and understated approach. What remains important is the sense of responsibility, love and cultural pride shared by the mothers, regardless of how they choose to celebrate the occasion.
The series reflects how Umgidi continues to evolve while remaining rooted in respect for tradition. In an interview with DStv, Ndiki expressed how he felt about returning to the channel. He described being back on Mzansi Magic as “returning home”, adding that it is where his dreams started and continue to grow.
He also shared that the concept of the show immediately resonated with him, saying it was important to support content that is told by South Africans, for South Africans.
Speaking about his time filming the series, Ndiki described the experience as overwhelmingly positive.
“My experience with the moms, their sons and their families has been absolutely phenomenal. It really shows how welcoming we South Africans are and how open-minded we can be.
“With every family I visited, I felt embraced and treated like one of their own. So many memories were created, and so many genuine bonds were formed along the way,” he said.
“Mgidi Moms” is set to premiere on March 29, with new episodes airing on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) every Sunday at 6pm.
