The breadwinner debate continues - this time around with one of Mzansi’s IT couples, Bontle Modiselle-Moloi and Priddy Ugly (real name Ricardo Moloi).
The popular South African choreographer recently shared that she would not mind being a breadwinner in her relationship with her husband, Priddy Ugly.
While on the "L-Tido Podcast", Modiselle-Moloi touched on the topic of being a provider in her relationship, sharing that “I was never a girl who was interested in a guy that had the money.”
She further labelled it as “unfortunate” if money is the only thing that a guy has to offer in a relationship.
The media personality gave context by explaining that, growing up her mother set an example for her and her siblings to always make their own money.
“My mother is a point of reference of how to make life work. In fact, how to maximise the best of what you got in a situation that gives you very little.
“I saw my mother make the most out of nothing,” she explained.
Adopting her mother’s teachings and being told to never depend on anyone for anything, the actress said that she “never had any expectation to be looked after”.
The mother of two explained that if other women expect their partners to look after them, that is totally okay.
However, when it comes to her, she prefers to take care of herself financially and not depend on her partner.
Modiselle-Moloi highlighted an important aspect that life is expensive, especially in today’s economy.
“Of course every woman wants a man to provide, it does not mean it removes you from the ability of being able to provide as well.
“So I’m thinking practically, school fees doesn't care where the money came from, me or him.” She said. “Rent, food - in this economy, in these lives and times, to be able to survive life, not even thrive, it doesn’t care who the money is coming from, it just needs to be paid.”
When asked about the breadwinner allegations that they have been facing for the past few years, Modiselle-Moloi shared that she is not fazed by people’s opinions about their relationship on social media, saying that she is the breadwinner in their relationship.
“I feel nothing [because] it’s not anything for me to feel. It’s not real - it’s always interesting when people say what they say confidently with no information, verification and no insight” she said.
The internet ignited a debate over what she said on a podcast, with some agreeing with what she is saying about having no expectations to be taken care of by a man.
“Bontle is all of us, please. When you love, you love,” @michellemodika commented.
“Crazy how Nandi was saying black men deserve grace, we agreed so much with her, but we are clowning Bontle and Priddy Ugly for the dynamics of their relationship.” @iamleonard_LEO shared.
However, some social media users disagreed with Modiselle’s opinion.
“If she prides herself on never needing a man, what role does he actually play? And he just said ‘facts,” @khal_juniier wrote.
“This is not how it was meant to be. The pride of a man is in providing for his family. I don’t care what anyone says,” @SaniExplore added.
