Stogie T has brought together rivals Nasty C and A-Reece on the same song - without either knowing the other would feature. This collaboration helped squash years of rumoured beef between two of South Africa's biggest rap stars.
Boitumelo Molekane, who is well known as Stogie T, has finally released his long-awaited song, "The Horsemen." The track features a lineup of hip-hop heavyweights: David Junior Ngcobo, better known as Nasty C; Lehlogonolo Ronald Mataboge, known professionally as A-Reece; and Gift Magubane Pimville, who goes by Maggz. Hip-hop fans have been anticipating this collaboration for months.
In a recent interview with YFM, Stogie T detailed how the collaboration came together and why he chose not to inform Nasty C and A-Reece that they would be appearing on the same song during the early stages of recording.
In May, Nasty C confirmed an unreleased song with A-reece, stating Stogie T hadn't informed them of their shared feature. Nasty C texted A-reece, saying, "I just did a song with Stogie T., I didn’t know you were gonna be on the song, but I’m still down to go ahead with this. Where are we at before we do that? Are we not f**king with each other or what?”
On the contrary, A-Reece was on the same page. “He was like, ‘Nah, dude, what? We’re good. We’re not beefing or whatever.’ He said he had no idea either.”
Nasty and Areece have always tried to clear the air, but whenever one of them tries to do so, misunderstandings just get in their way.
The feud was evident when Nasty C invited A-Reece to the Blue Ivy tour, but A-Reece arrived late. Nasty C's team allegedly denied A-Reece's request to perform one song. Nasty C later stated in an interview that he refused the late arrival, saying, "This is my show, I am not gonna accept his disrespect," suggesting it revealed A-Reece's "real intentions."
Nasty C attributes the perceived "beef" with A-Reece largely to fans and a miscommunication between the two artists. He clarified the situation, saying, "I think that it’s like a friendly thing when you’re like, oh! It’s just a friendly competition, you guys came over same time, who’s gonna do what first?" when asked about the origins of their rivalry.
“It was like that at first, and then obviously, fans find things, and they make things out and make it bigger than what it actually was. The whole thing just gets blown out of proportion, and then the lack of communication,” he concluded by saying, “There’s really nothing there.”
In August, Areece posted on X, clearing all the rumors, capturing “David and I aren’t covertly beefin’ or anything like that, man; that narrative should start collecting dust at this point.”
“None of what’s happening currently is intended to feed into that BS. & if I can keep it a bean, dropping on the same day would actually be amazing for South African Hip-Hop…Which has never happened before, if you think about it. Two giants, two different sounds, two different fan bases, one culture. Shit, I mean, add Shane in there too now, imagine that.”
This move shifted the focus away from feuds and toward the growth of the culture itself.
The collaboration on this song allowed the two artists to realize their perceived 'beef' was merely a misunderstanding, a resolution greatly facilitated by Stogie T. With both artists having granted clearance, the song was released with a clean slate for them and a clear record for fans who had perpetuated the rumors.
