Ilse van der Merwe Lights Up V&A Waterfront with 'Timeless South African' Book Launch

Acclaimed author Ilse van der Merwe officially launched her newest cookbook, Timeless South African: Celebrating 101 Iconic Dishes, published by Penguin Random House South Africa in August 2025. The launch took place at Workshop17, Watershed, at the V&A Waterfront. 

Timeless South African beautifully curates a selection of 101 dishes deeply woven into the South African culinary fabric—whether staples or celebratory fare, each dish stands as a testament to our nation's warmth, diversity, and shared heritage.

From vetkoek and amagwinya to koeksisters and gatsby, and the storied origins of bobotie, hertzoggies, and Durban bunny chow, the book marries rich storytelling with stunning full-page photography.

The launch in collaboration with Loot.co.za unfolded with the charismatic Pippa Hudson in conversation with Ilse, where they explored the inspiration behind the book, the stories that shape each recipe, and the modern twists giving heritage dishes new life. Attendees were then invited to engage directly with Ilse during a joyous book signing—a highlight for many as they shared stories, reflections, and their own culinary memories with the author.

About Ilse van der Merwe

Based in Stellenbosch, Ilse van der Merwe—also known as The Food Fox—has built a reputation as one of South Africa’s most beloved culinary creatives. Her journey began with her blog, TheFoodFox.com, launched in 2011, which has since evolved into a dynamic platform for food writing, styling, and recipe development.

Ilse is the author of several acclaimed cookbooks with Penguin Random House South Africa: Cape Mediterranean (2019), which garnered a bronze medal at the 2020 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards; Simply Seasonal (2021); Easy Al Fresco (2023); and now Timeless South African (2025).

She has also hosted two television series and frequently appears on national food programs, bringing her warm, creative eye to an even broader audience.

With Timeless South African, Ilse celebrates the soul of South African cuisine—drawing from formal and informal conversations with chefs, food lovers, and community members from across the cultural spectrum.
