Would you take Grandpa on holiday?

MTV knows just how to keep you glued to the screen. The channel comes up with those ideas that you want to dismiss at first sight, but then you get hooked on them for longer than you expected.
Think of shows like Jersey Shore and Punk’d.
It is in line with this thinking that another “silly” yet addictive show is lined up for your future. Titled Springbreak With Granddad, the show is about just that; a holiday with your parents’ parents.
However, as usual, nothing is quite straightforward on this show.
Here, young people are selected to go on a really awesome holiday with young people of their own age. The trip promises to be epic as it is an all- expenses paid affair.
Who doesn’t want one of those? We all do.
What we do not want, however, is to find out that our grandparents have also been invited on the very same trip.
Which is exactly what this show does not tell the young ones.
So the best part of the programme is when they discover that their plans will include Zimmer frames, dentures and hearing aids. It is cruel, but great TV all the same.
This is a crazy idea, but we can’t deny that it should work.
But perhaps you have to think of the relationship you have with your grandparents to see if this will really work or not.
Some people have cool grand-parents, like Betty White who will party with the young ones, making it easy for everyone to get along.
Others, however, might have just brought along their parents because the grandparents are so strict.
So this show puts related people in real situations, where those in charge need to show if they are strict or not.
This element of last-minute surprise has also been seen on Exes On The Beach, another MTV show that cashed in on ex-lovers meeting on an island when they thought they were going to meet new people.
Sneaky, right? Right.
After Big Brother, televised social experiments are the way to go and are packaged as reality TV.
Spring Break with Grandad starts next week Tuesday at 9.15pm on MTV (DStv channel 130).
