ONE OF Stellenbosch’s oldest landmarks, the Klein Libertas Theatre, was engulfed by flames at the weekend, leaving it scorched and gutted, but fans of the venue, which has been home to many musical acts and plays over 55 years, have not lost hope.

They took to Facebook on Sunday, sending words of encouragement to the owners of the theatre, who are picking up the pieces after the blaze.

And while insurers are still set to investigate the damage caused by the fire which was discovered at around 7am on Saturday, users on social media were certain the theatre could be restored.

“Thank you for all the messages, phone calls and support. We really appreciate it. We'll keep you updated with progress here,” wrote the owners on the theatre's Facebook page this morning.

The theatre is owned by its director, Gi-Gi Fourie.

One user wrote: “Like I know the Fouries they’re seeing this as the potential to bettering Klein Libertas Theatre's layout to be the best venue in Stellenbosch!”
