Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane won Diva Extraordinaire on Thursday night at the 5th annual Gay Feather Awards.

The event was held at Kyalami’s Theatre on the Track and was attended by a horde of celebrities and members of Gauteng’s gay community.

The premier rocked up wearing a tight fitting pink-and-black lacy dress and pink peep-toe shoes.

The qualification for winning the Diva Extraordinaire award as defined by the judges of the event is: “These women always carry themselves well and have strong presence.”

Another winner on the night was Savita Mbuli, widow of popular SABC 2 news reader Vuyo.

Following his death, stories about his bedroom indiscretion surfaced and her reactions, according to certain gossip columns, were anything but dignified.

She pipped the Gupta family, who were fellow nominees in the category.

Nominees who qualify for Drama Queen of the Year are those we read about every Sunday over breakfast, and their lives revolve around dramatic behaviours and situations.

Fag Hag of the Year went to model Pearl Thusi, who “never leaves home without her favourite accessory – a gay friend”.

Cutest Couple went to the popular Vuzu couple, comedian Tall Ass Mo and his pregnant wife Mome.

Hot Chick of the Year was won by iSibaya’s lead character, Nomzamo Mbatha, while fellow actor on the set Pallance Dladla won Hunk of the Year.

Best Styled Female and Best Styled Male went to radio presenter Azania Mosaka and actor and director Thapelo Mokoena.

Mokoena is best known for being the lead in the Hunters Gold advertising campaign.

The increasingly popular Bujy Bikwa won the coveted Socialite of the Year. These winners are seen at every opening of an envelope or erection of a stop sign.

There were also more serious categories.

Role Model of the Year was won by a top 10 winner in the CNN Heroes, Thulani Madondo.

This was for his academic support to 400 children living in Kliptown.

Paralympian winner of the US Open Quad Grand Slam tennis title Lucas Sithole won Sports Personality of the Year.

The final award on the night is given to a special individual whose work and actions have uplifted the gay and lesbian community.

This year, photographer Zanele Muholi was the recipient.

She gained fame when then minister of arts and culture Lulu Xingwana walked out of her photographic exhibition as she found some of the subject matter offensive.

Hosts on the night were the glamorous Lalla Hirayama and the iconic musician Stoan Seate.

The event kicked off with a performance by popular dance group Vintage Crew.

They paid tribute to local and international gay icons like musician Elton John, fashion designers Gert Johan Coetzee and David Tlale and American actor Wentworth Miller. - The Star
