In a bold political reshuffle that signals shifting power dynamics in Gauteng, the Economic Freedom Fighters' (EFF) provincial chairperson Nkululeko Dunga has been thrust into one of the province’s most critical roles — MEC for Finance.
The announcement, made on Wednesday by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, places Dunga at the heart of the province’s financial decision-making at a time of mounting economic pressure and political recalibration.
Dunga replaces Lebogang Maile, who now takes charge of the education portfolio in a move that underscores the Premier’s intent to reshuffle influence across key departments.
What makes Dunga’s rise particularly striking is its timing. Just days ago, he was sworn in as a Member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature — and now, he finds himself overseeing the province’s purse strings.
The EFF has rallied behind the appointment, describing Dunga as a disciplined and battle-tested leader with a firm commitment to the working class and the poor. Yet, his return to provincial prominence follows a turbulent chapter in Ekurhuleni, where political tensions reshaped his trajectory.
Dunga previously stepped down as EFF caucus leader amid escalating friction with the ANC over power-sharing arrangements within the mayoral committee. The fallout culminated in his removal as Finance MMC by Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, marking a dramatic exit from local governance.
Now, in a political comeback few could have predicted, Dunga assumes a far more influential role — one that could redefine both his career and Gauteng’s fiscal direction.
