Durban has been listed in the top five of most active tweeting cities, and Mandela was the most commonly tweeted topic in Africa during the last three months of 2013.
This was according to Portland, a company specialising in integrated media and political campaigns analysis.
On Wednesday, Portland published analysed geo-located tweets originating from Africa during the final three months of last year.
According to their website, cities in South Africa and Egypt were the most active on Twitter.
Johannesburg ranked first, with 344 215 geo-located tweets during the period measured.
It was followed by Ekurhuleni with 264 172 and Cairo with 227 509. Durban was in fourth place with 163 019 tweets.
Alexandria in Egypt, with 159 534, ranked number five.
