A massive three-day weekend festival of public space activations, creative experiences, and open-street programming is set to transform Cape Town’s Central Business District (CBD) at the end of May. Driven by the Mission for Inner City Cape Town, the ambitious initiative aims to reshape how locals and visitors engage with the city center, encouraging people to experience the urban heart of Cape Town far beyond the traditional workweek.
From Friday, 29 May to Sunday, 31 May, the inner city will play host to a dynamic series of interconnected public activations. Featuring the popular Street Feast, Inner City Saturdays, and the highly anticipated return of Bree Street Sundays—organized in collaboration with the Young Urbanists—the entire weekend is designed to inspire people to walk, explore, gather, and reconnect.
The extensive programme forms a vital part of the Mission’s broader placemaking efforts, which focus on creating a more vibrant, walkable, and people-focused inner city. Gareth Pearson, Placemaking Lead at the Mission for Inner City Cape Town, notes that the inner city has so much to offer beyond being a place people commute into for work. He explains that these kinds of activations help people reconnect with the city and with one another, whether it’s sharing a meal in a public square, exploring creative spaces, or enjoying the novelty of a people-first street.
The weekend kicks off with the return of Street Feast to Thibault Square on Friday, 29 May, from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM. This midday activation promises to inject life into the heart of the CBD with live music from the Jason Marshall Quartet and a bustling array of food vendors, including Sticky Lips, Ishushu, and Herenity, with more vendors to be announced soon.

On Saturday, 30 May, the programming shifts its focus to local craftsmanship and designwith the inaugural edition of Open Ateliers from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. This completely free initiative grants the public unprecedented, behind-the-scenes access to local creative businesses, studios, and cultural spaces. Visitors can explore ceramics at Anthony Shapiro Ceramics and HAN, or view exquisite jewelry design at Anna Rosholt Jewellery Design, Black Betty Design, Ida Elsje Jewellery, and Philippa Green Jewellery. Fashion enthusiasts can visit clothing brands METRO= HANDMADE and Alexandra Höjer, while scent lovers can explore the perfumery Gozdava 1590. Additionally, open artist studios will be accessible at Lemkus Gallery, featuring artists-in-residence Aaron Philander and Smiso Cele.
Saturday will also feature history and architecture enthusiasts joining a free, two-hour guided walking tour titled "Studio City!: A Tour through Five Centuries of Cape Town’s Creativity." Led by Cameron Peters of Cape Town Heritage Tours, the walk explores the rich history of manufacturing and creativity in the historic center, departing at 10:00 AM from outside the Cape Heritage Hotel.
The weekend concludes with a dramatic open-street takeover on Sunday, 31 May, where Bree Street will be entirely closed to vehicular traffic between Wale and Strand Streets, including Shortmarket Street, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Presented in partnership with the Mayor’s Office and the City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate, the event serves as an ongoing street experiment exploring how public roads can be reimagined as safer, greener, and more pedestrian-friendly zones.
ood vendors confirmed so far include Sticky Lips, Ishushu and Herenity, with additional vendors still to be announced. Entertainment for the afternoon will be provided by the Jason Marshall Quartet.

The day will feature the final winter edition of Bree St Food Sundays from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, alongside urban gardening activations and green initiatives hosted by Vincent Truter of the Mission. Visitors are invited to walk, sit, garden, eat, and socialize freely in the car-free lanes.
According to organizers, consistent public space activation is crucial to permanently reshaping the identity of the CBD. Pearson emphasizes that public life in public spaces is what gives cities vitality, and creating more opportunities for people to safely experience the city in engaging ways ultimately makes the inner city stronger and more connected.
