The historic streets of Cape Town’s inner city are set to be transformed into a vibrant open-air gallery this Saturday, as a major cultural initiative invites the public to rediscover the CBD’s concentrated art precinct.

On 25 April 2026, from 10am to 2pm, The Mission for Inner City Cape Town will host a gallery-focused edition of Inner City Saturdays. The programme encourages residents and tourists alike to explore Church Lane and its surrounding streets, home to one of the most significant clusters of exhibition spaces in South Africa.

Participating venues include 99 Loop Gallery, Eclectica Contemporary, The Cape Gallery, Nel Gallery, and the Iziko Old Town House on Greenmarket Square. In a move to make high culture accessible to all, all participating galleries will be free and open to the public during the event hours, with the exception of the Iziko Old Town House, which maintains its standard entry fees.

Gareth Pearson, Placemaking Lead at The Mission for Inner City CT, believes the initiative is vital for reconnecting the public with the cultural treasures already hidden in plain sight. He explains that Cape Town's inner city is rich in cultural spaces, particularly Church Street, which features an exceptional concentration of galleries within walking distance. The aim is to encourage people to slow down and rediscover how vibrant and walkable the CBD can be when engaging with its existing heritage.

The event forms a central pillar of a broader placemaking strategy by The Mission, a new non-profit entity dedicated to reviving the city's streets. By bringing together government, business, and local residents, the organisation aims to transform public spaces into vibrant environments that thrive beyond the traditional Monday-to-Friday workweek.

By activating these precincts on a Saturday, the organisers hope to strengthen the bond between the city's people, its unique culture, and the built environment. Prospective visitors can find further updates and walkabout schedules on the organisation’s Instagram account as the weekend approaches.

As the CBD continues its post-pandemic evolution, events like Inner City Saturdays signal a shift towards a more integrated, pedestrian-friendly future for the heart of the Mother City.
