Remembering Johnny Davids: A beloved singer and TV presenter who touched many lives

Tributes are pouring in for Johnny Davids, the beloved Namibian-born singer and TV presenter, who tragically passed away at 49 after a heart attack.

Fans and colleagues have honoured the memory of Johnny Davids, the beloved Namibian-born singer and TV presenter, who died at 49, leaving behind a legacy of heartfelt music and cherished memories.

He is believed to have suffered a heart attack in the early hours of Thursday morning.

In a tribute from Radio Tygerberg, Davids was described as an "award-winning TV host, sports commentator, radio host and singer. He was known for his sincere Afrikaans music and strong bond with fans. Many remember him as a humble 'voice of the people'. A man after God's heart."

"Our deepest condolences to his wife, children and relatives," the post read.

Davids was also a field presenter on Landbouweekliks on DSTV's channel 147.

VIA Head of Channel, Azelia Morkel, said Davids joined the Landbouweekliks team and the larger VIA family in 2024.

"He was, among other things, a respected SuperSport commentator and recently published his autobiographical book, Boytjie , - an honest account of his journey from a difficult childhood to success and healing. He has also had a successful music career," Morkel said.

"Johnny was an exceptional person with a remarkable story of victory and hope.

"His passion for people and his ability to connect with farmers and viewers made him a welcome face on the channel. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Liezel, his three sons and extended family during this difficult time," Morkel said.

Many have taken to social media where they shared tributes to Davids on his social media page. 

"A voice gone quiet, but you will live on in the hearts and minds of those you touched. Johnny Davids I know your legacy and testimony have given so many others life, and it will be so for many more generations. Thank you for the humble, amazing gentleman who you were in this world. You will be missed. My deepest condolences and prayers go to my dear friend Liezel Swarts Davids and your boys, extended family and friends," shared Anita Joan du Preez.

"Preached at Friend of God on Sunday, and he still sang his new song. Life is short," added Shawn Sparks.

"Oh Johnny so fast you picked us up a lot with everything you did Liezel good luck to you and your sons and family may God strengthen you," said Julanda Catherina.

"Oh dear Johnny Davids, rest in peace and thank you or the privilege. My heart and prayers go out to your loved ones and colleagues and family. Rest in peace," said Simon Patrick Rademan.
