The Cape Summer Festival of Racing drew to a dazzling close at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth this past weekend, where a perfect blend of sizzling seafood, live jazz, and elite racing captivated approximately 3,000 attendees. The atmosphere was electric, showcasing not only the thrill of racing but also the rich culinary traditions of the Cape, making for an unforgettable afternoon.
All eyes were on the track as Wish List made history by clinching the Gr 1 Lucky Fish Cape Derby, marking a significant milestone by becoming the first filly to win this prestigious race since 1999. Her victorious journey ended a 26-year wait for a filly to take home the coveted title, as she sped past her competitors. Following closely behind was Note To Self, who secured a commendable second place, while Viva’s Liberty took third, just edging out Star Major.
Off the racetrack, the event transformed into a lively festival celebrating the region’s finest seafood. Local vendors showcased a cornucopia of flavours, serving everything from traditional Cape delicacies to contemporary culinary creations, drawing long queues of eager food lovers. Families enjoyed a day of leisure, with a dedicated children’s play area featuring a jumping castle, petting zoo, and pony rides on Topdeck, the gentle Welsh Stallion.
The vibrant atmosphere was further enhanced by an eclectic live music lineup, featuring performances from local talents like Jarrad Ricketts, Selwyn & Roy, Simply Strings, and Al Petersen. The seamless blend of top-tier racetrack action, gastronomic delights, and live entertainment truly captured the spirit of summer.
Vishen Naidoo, the Commercial Manager for Lucky Fish, expressed his enthusiasm about this collaboration: “It’s a brilliant clash of worlds: the raw adrenaline of South Africa’s premier Gr 1 staying contest for three-year-olds, paired with sizzling seafood trucks. The turnout has been electric and I couldn’t be happier with this partnership.” He noted that Lucky Fish is dedicated to revitalising horse racing in South Africa by appealing to new audiences and nurturing their appreciation for the sport.
Echoing Naidoo's sentiments, Stephen Marshall, Events and Marketing Executive at Race Coast, highlighted the importance of sponsorship in the industry's growth. “Lucky Fish’s vibrant presence was the perfect fit for the finale. Their electric colours brightened the venue, and it was fantastic to see such a diverse crowd coming together for a day of first-class racing and entertainment.”
The Lucky Fish Cape Derby serves as a crucial stepping stone in the racing calendar, paving the way for competitors eyeing the prestigious Hollywoodbets Durban July, where top horses will face off against seasoned rivals in the ultimate test of racing prowess. As the festival of flavours and thrills came to an end, the commitment of brands like Lucky Fish to support local racing initiatives shone through, ensuring the future of the sport remains bright.
