In a momentous occasion for women’s sailing in South Africa, a team has been selected to compete in the inaugural 2026 New York Yacht Club (NYYC) Women’s International Championship.
This prestigious event is one of the leading professional women’s sailing competitions globally and is set to take place under the esteemed banner of the NYYC, the long-time custodian of the America’s Cup — the oldest trophy in international sport.
With strong backing from founding partner Rolex and regatta sponsor Helly Hansen, this championship showcases the growing prominence of women in this exhilarating sport.
South Africa’s selection comes as a significant milestone, especially considering the highly competitive international field from which it emerged. The NYYC's selection committee faced the arduous task of narrowing down 48 applications from around the world to just 20 teams, each representing some of the best sailors across the globe.
“These 20 teams include some of the best sailors in the world and come from all corners of the globe,” commented the club.
Leading the charge for South Africa is Dominique Provoyeur, an accomplished Olympian with vast experience in Olympic and high-performance keelboat racing. This campaign, set to span eight months, is focused on elite competition, development, and fostering long-term opportunities for women in sailing. Provoyeur expressed her pride in being selected to represent South Africa, stating, “This campaign is about high performance, opportunity, and building pathways for women in sailing. We are committed to fielding a team that reflects both excellence and the diversity of South African talent.”
The South African squad will consist of 8-10 talented women sailors, chosen through a formal application and on-water trial process. Notably, the selection will strive to ensure representation, with a commitment to include women of colour from previously disadvantaged backgrounds who have demonstrated remarkable accomplishments in sailing. “This reflects the evolving face of elite sport in South Africa,” added Provoyeur, highlighting the importance of inclusivity within the team.
This championship is expected to not only elevate South Africa’s presence on the global sailing stage but also inspire a new generation of female sailors, fostering an environment where diversity is celebrated and encouraged. As this elite group of South African women gears up for the NYYC Women’s International Championship, the maritime community eagerly anticipates the historic journey that lies ahead.
