Premier Alan Winde addresses policing concerns in Kraaifontein

In a bid to address major public concern surrounding policing in Cape Town, Premier Alan Winde conducted an oversight visit to the Kraaifontein Police Station yesterday. This visit comes amid rising frustration among residents regarding the impact of violent crime on their daily lives, highlighting the critical need for effective law enforcement and community safety measures.

“The residents of Kraaifontein are understandably concerned and frustrated by the impact of violent crime on their daily lives,” stated Premier Winde. “Through these oversight visits, I want to engage directly with priority SAPS precinct leadership to ensure that everything is being done to tackle crime head-on.” He emphasised that crime-fighting and prevention are essential components of creating an environment conducive to economic growth, reinforcing that “in addition to decisive policing, we need to see strong economic growth that creates jobs.”

This oversight visit is part of a broader initiative focusing on high-crime precincts across the Western Cape, aiming to guarantee that the South African Police Service (SAPS) is deploying all necessary resources to combat crime effectively. In line with this commitment, Winde is scheduled to meet with acting Minister of Police Professor Firoz Cachalia early next month to discuss strategies for enhancing policing capabilities.

Kraaifontein, a community beleaguered by persistently high crime rates, emerged as a priority area for intervention and monitoring by the provincial government. During his time at the Kraaifontein SAPS, Winde engaged with station leadership and personnel, gaining insights into current crime trends, including violence, property-related offences, and the pervasive influence of gangs. The implications of these crime levels on both personnel morale and operational resources were also assessed.

Winde's engagement extended to directly conversing with police officers about their daily realities, understanding firsthand the challenges they face in their commitments to community safety. In assessing the police station's infrastructure, the Premier reviewed various areas including office space, holding cells, and operational facilities, focusing on how these physical conditions contribute to service delivery outcomes.

Among the pressing challenges discussed were:

• The effectiveness of the Kraaifontein Community Policing Forum (CPF)
• Shortages in operational vehicles
• The need to improve the use of crime intelligence, technology, and innovation

Reinforcing the support for SAPS, Premier Winde acknowledged the arduous conditions under which officers operate, pledging the Western Cape Government’s dedication to enhancing law enforcement effectiveness through collaboration and improved crime intelligence measures. “These engagements are about taking the concerns of residents to SAPS leadership and ensuring that every possible intervention is explored to improve safety and protect our residents,” he remarked.

As Winde wrapped up his visit, he affirmed that community safety remains a top priority for the provincial government. He reiterated that as part of ongoing accountability measures, regular oversight visits will be made across the Western Cape, aimed at identifying challenges and driving co-ordinated efforts to enhance safety in communities.
