Tragic fall near Bailey's Kloof claims hiker's life

Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) teams were dispatched to Muizenberg on Sunday morning following a heartbreaking incident involving a hiker who fell several metres near Bailey’s Kloof. T
The individual, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was discovered with critical injuries after scrambling above a trail. In a bid to provide immediate assistance, a small team onboard the Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS / Air Mercy Service (AMS) rescue helicopter arrived swiftly at the scene.
The rescuers worked tirelessly to stabilise the patient before advanced medical care was administered by a Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS paramedic. Tragically, despite their quick actions, the hiker later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. In a poignant statement, Wilderness Search and Rescue expressed their condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.”
This incident was not isolated, as earlier that same morning, rescuers were also called to Lion’s Head. A 52-year-old visitor from Bloemfontein experienced a mis-step while descending the summit, resulting in a fall. Once again, the dedicated team on the rescue helicopter was lowered to assess and treat the injured woman. Following stabilisation, she was airlifted to a nearby landing zone and subsequently transported to hospital by ambulance.
Later in the afternoon, the rescue efforts continued when a specialised trail runner was deployed to aid two stranded British hikers, aged 27 and 28, who had become disoriented along the Kloof Corner hiking trail after deviating from the India Venster path. Thanks to the runner’s swift intervention, both hikers were located and guided back down the mountain, safely before nightfall at approximately 20:00.
These incidents serve as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers of hiking in the region’s beautiful, yet treacherous landscapes. As the days grow shorter and conditions can change swiftly, hikers are urged to take precautionary measures and remain vigilant while exploring the picturesque trails.
