Cape Town has once again solidified its reputation as a premier travel destination. It won the title of Best City – Editor’s Choice in the International Category at the prestigious Travel + Leisure India’s Best Awards 2025. This accolade not only underscores the city's allure but also positions it firmly on the radar of Indian travellers who seek unique experiences and vibrant cultures around the globe.
This recognition is a testament to Cape Town's exceptional offerings, which range from breathtaking landscapes and rich history to diverse culinary experiences. Notably, the winners in the International Hotels categories further highlight the local hospitality industry’s commitment to quality, with the President Hotel being crowned Best Leisure Hotel and Ellerman House named Best Luxury Boutique Hotel. Additionally, the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve near Gansbaai was awarded Best Sustainable Hotel, a nod to the region's commitment to responsible tourism and environmental stewardship.
Cape Town’s Chief Marketing Officer for Tourism, Briony Brookes, expressed pride in the city's recognition, emphasizing its capacity to create unforgettable moments for visitors. “This is a proud moment for Cape Town. Being recognised by Travel + Leisure India’s editors reflects the city’s energy, diversity, and the types of experiences visitors carry with them long after they’ve gone,” she remarked. “Indian travellers are curious, experience-focused, and increasingly global, and Cape Town welcomes them with warmth, depth, and a sense of discovery.”
The timing of the award is fortuitous. Earlier this year, James Vos, the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, spearheaded a delegation to major Indian cities to bolster tourism ties. He noted that the award comes on the heels of targeted marketing campaigns, including social media promotions and billboards in key Indian cities, all aimed at increasing travel interest in the city.
“These efforts are deliberate,” Vos stated, highlighting the City’s commitment to stimulating both the supply and demand for travel to Cape Town. “Growing visitor numbers grows our tourism economy. Every booking translates into real economic spin-offs for local businesses and, ultimately, more jobs for Capetonians.” With new campaigns poised to launch in 2026, Vos is optimistic, noting that the early results of their strategy indicate a successful connection with a market eager for culture and memorable experiences.
From the iconic Table Mountain and the bustling V&A Waterfront to the scenic Cape Winelands, Cape Town offers a blend of adventure and familiar comfort. This unique mix resonates particularly well with Indian travellers, who appreciate the city’s rich tapestry of experiences.
This recent accolade is more than just a momentary celebration; it marks Cape Town confidently stepping into the future as a global travel favourite. With international recognition, burgeoning momentum, and strengthened ties to India, Cape Town is not only poised for growth but is also ready to welcome visitors seeking unforgettable journeys.
