In an inspiring culmination of perseverance and dedication, Dyan Buis, the former Paralympic gold medallist and world champion athlete, graduated with a Master’s degree in education policy studies from Stellenbosch University. This milestone underscores a journey marked by resilience, driven by a personal philosophy of excellence that has guided him not only in sport but throughout his academic pursuits.

Buis, from Riversdale, had to overcome many challenges in his youth. Diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy at a young age—a condition affecting movement and muscle control—he has consistently defied the odds, transforming what could have been a limitation into a launching pad for success. Through sheer determination, he has proven that disability is not a barrier but an opportunity for growth and achievement.

“My motivation was to always reach for the stars, to always give my best,” Buis reflected. “In sport, I learned that I do everything to honour the Lord and Saviour who granted me my talents.” This unwavering faith and a competitive spirit serve as the backbone of his achievements, which span from athletics to academia and beyond.

Currently employed as a teacher at Lückhoff High School and a pastor at the Apostolic Faith Mission of South Africa, Buis embodies a multi-faceted commitment to excellence. He acknowledges the difficulties of balancing his contributions to sport, education, family, and community but firmly believes that “giving up is not an option.” His successful navigation of these responsibilities can be attributed to the vital support network around him, including his family and mentors at Stellenbosch University.

Buis expressed profound gratitude for the resources he received from Stellenbosch University, stating, “The Maties Sport High Performance Unit fully supported me... the Disability Unit made a momentous impact with funding that was much needed.” Such backing not only provided financial aid but also fostered an environment conducive to both his athletic and academic growth.

Acknowledgment also goes to his wife Erna, whose steadfast support played a pivotal role throughout his journey. “She managed our household with incredible dedication and always ensured I prioritised my studies,” Buis said, highlighting her contributions to his success. Their partnership allowed him to devote the necessary time and energy to excel in both his sporting career and academic goals.

Focusing on inclusive education policies, Buis’s research examined the educational experiences of learners with disabilities within mainstream schools in the Cape Winelands. His first-hand experience as a learner with cerebral palsy provides unique insights into the disparities prevalent in educational practices and underscores the significance of equitable education opportunities.

“My study reveals significant gaps between policy intentions and actual school practices,” he said, capturing the essence of his findings on inclusivity in education.

As a champion in both sport and academia, Buis encourages others grappling with personal challenges to pursue their dreams relentlessly. “Don’t give up,” he urges, emphasising that hard work can lead to realisation of one’s ambitions. “If I can achieve this, so can you.”

Although Buis now prioritises his family and career over his athletic pursuits, he remains passionate about contributing to the professionalisation of parasport in South Africa in the future. With plans to publish his research findings, pursue a PhD, and potentially lecture, Dyan Buis exemplifies the adage that the sky is the limit when ambition intersects with unwavering support and a tenacious spirit.
