Lentegeur police have registered a case of reckless and negligent driving following a chaotic accident this morning at the corner of Morgenster Road and Eisleben Road, which left six prisoners, two civilians, and two SAPS members injured.
Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk explained that the SAPS vehicle was en route from Pollsmoor Prison to Philippi Magistrates Court when it collided with a black Toyota. One female and five male prisoners sustained slight injuries and were transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment under police guard, with all prisoners accounted for, and the rest taken to court.
The two occupants of the Toyota and two SAPS members were also transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, and the circumstances surrounding this accident are now under investigation.
The scene quickly descended into chaos as suspects were seen lying on the ground handcuffed, while a woman dressed in a nurse uniform was in the ambulance with another woman covered in blood and screaming in agony, her head wrapped in a bandage. Residents quickly gathered, commenting on how SAPS vehicles are always seen speeding across intersections, especially without their sirens, and others pointed out the large number of vans at the scene "because it was one of their own."
Tensions flared when a constable told media that he did not want them there, causing the crowd to become rowdy, shouting that police must stop protecting their own. This accident occurs barely two weeks after Angelo “Elo Rasta” Adams was tragically cut in half just a few metres away when an out-of-control BMW crashed into him, leading residents to call once again for stricter road measures on the road.
