The 7th International Loving Peace Art Competition, organised by the South Africa branch of the International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG), was a resounding success as it unfolded at the Sherwood Community Hall in Manenberg recently.

Children and youth from 11 local schools gathered, bringing with them powerful artwork that voiced their innermost dreams of peace under the theme “Peace, Let’s Be Friends! What can we do to achieve peace?”.

With creativity and hope flowing from their brushes, the young participants explored the nuances of peace, depicting scenes filled with empathy, cultural harmony, and a vision of a world free from conflict. Each piece was a heartfelt reflection of a generation yearning for a brighter, more peaceful future.

The festivities commenced at 10:00 a.m. and began with an opening prayer and dua, creating a moment of shared reflection. IWPG representative Patsy Daniels delivered a warm welcome address, followed by an inspiring peace message from a guest speaker. The  event, which aimed to foster a sense of community and collaboration, featured a vibrant cultural performance before the main event - the art competition.

Adjudication for the artworks was carried out by notable artists Gardie Judge, Preyser-Grantham, and Raeff John from the Butterfly Art Foundation. The judges commended the sincerity and creativity manifested in the students' work, highlighting how these young artists are able to articulate such profound messages through their art. Some outstanding winning pieces may even gain recognition on international platforms, as they are proposed for future exhibitions hosted by IWPG.

This meaningful event was made possible through the generous contributions from local organisations, showcasing the spirit of community unity. The Butterfly Art Foundation generously sponsored the necessary art supplies and materials, while the Ward Councillor, Food for Life, and the Mustadafin Foundation provided nutritious meals to participants and attendees. Furthermore, the Manenberg Drivers Club volunteered its transport services, ensuring that students travelled to and from the venue at no cost.

The event concluded on a high note, with abundant support from parents, teachers, local leaders, and community members, all coming to witness and celebrate the artistic expressions of peace conveyed by these young talents. IWPG an international women’s NGO recognised by UN ECOSOC and UN DGC, continues its mission to build peace networks and spread a culture of peace across numerous countries, maintaining a vision of achieving sustainable world peace.
