The case against the 33-year-old woman arrested with cocaine at Cape Town International Airport was postponed in absentia after the suspect was hospitalised.
The woman, who had allegedly swallowed a number of drug pellets, remains under medical care as efforts are made to safely remove the drugs from her system.
The arrest took place on 16 March 2025, following a successful multi-disciplinary, intelligence-led operation.
The operation, involving the Hawks' South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB), Border Police, Customs at Cape Town International Airport, Home Affairs, and Plattekloof Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), was prompted by information received about a suspect travelling from Brazil to Cape Town.
Upon her arrival, the woman was swiftly identified, and a search revealed cocaine hidden inside her sports bag.
Further investigation revealed that she had ingested an unknown quantity of drug pellets. As a result, she was immediately rushed to the hospital for medical attention, where attempts are being made to safely retrieve the drugs.

Major General Makgato, Western Cape Provincial Head of the Hawks, commended the coordinated efforts of the agencies involved. “This operation is a testament to the vigilance and collaboration of our teams. Thanks to their quick response, we were able to intercept the suspect and prevent further harm,” he said.
The suspect was Initially set to appear in Bellville Magistrate’s Court on 18 March 2025, but the case has been postponed until 24 March 2025, once her medical condition allows her to stand trial.
