A beloved classic is making its way to South African stages, and theatre enthusiasts are already buzzing with excitement. Pretty Woman: The Musical, based on the iconic 1990 film starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, is currently enchanting audiences at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town. The show runs until 19 April.

This vibrant stage adaptation, which premiered on Broadway in 2018 and has since received acclaim across the West End and various tours in North America and Europe, features an all-South African cast brimming with talent. Notably, two of the leads have recently been recognised at the prestigious Naledi Theatre Awards.

Leah Mari received the award for Best Lead Performance in a Musical Theatre Production for her portrayal of Vivian Ward in My Fair Lady, while Daniel Conradie, who plays the ambitious Philip Stuckey, won the Best Breakthrough Performance in a Musical Theatre Production for his role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

At the heart of Pretty Woman: The Musical lies the unforgettable love story of Vivian, a spirited young woman from the wrong side of the tracks, and Edward, a successful businessman. The production captures the essence of their unlikely romance with joy, laughter, and nostalgia, complemented by an energetic score that invites audiences to sing along. Featuring powerful solos such as "Freedom" and "I Can't Go Back," along with the show-stopping ensemble pieces "Welcome to Hollywood" and "Together Forever," the music was crafted by rock superstar Bryan Adams and his longtime collaborator Jim Vallance, delivering a sound that resonates deeply with the heart of the story.

Critics are raving about the production’s charm and high-quality performances. Timeout magazine describes it as a “Cinderella-style arc that makes it ever relatable and enjoyable,” while The Cape Robyn labels the show an “upbeat and fun performance with a hugely talented cast.” 2 Oceans Vibe expresses that the production is “a joyful escape into nostalgia,” and Biz Community highlights the entertainment value, calling it “funny, polished, and filled with strong performances.” Moreover, Theatre Scene Cape Town praises its “amazing vocals, warmth and humour,” confirming that this is a show not to be missed.

Produced by the renowned Showtime Management in association with Crossroads Live North America, Pretty Woman: The Musical carries a PG rating of 12+, due to its mature themes, so parental guidance is advised.
