A video purportedly showing Tuesday's deadly mass shooting in Nyanga has been widely circulated on social media, capturing what appears to be the brazen attack that left four men dead and two others wounded.

In the footage, a man can be seen walking across the road carrying an object concealed beneath a clothing item. He approaches taxis parked along Sheffield Road before producing what appears to be a machine gun and opening fire on a person seated in the front passenger seat of a taxi.

At the same time, two other armed men on the opposite side of the road are seen firing multiple shots at a blue vehicle. The gunmen then flee the scene on foot.

Police have not commented on the footage as yet.

The attack occurred at about 8.30am on Tuesday, 2 June, at the corner of Moonwood Drive and Sheffield Road in Hazeldene, Nyanga.

Western Cape police confirmed that four men were killed and two others injured when gunmen opened fire on a group of people before fleeing the scene.

Provincial detectives attached to the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime (SVC) Taxi Unit have since launched an investigation and are pursuing all available leads.

Police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut said forensic experts were processing the crime scene while detectives worked to identify and apprehend those responsible.

"Provincial detectives attached to the Provincial SVC Taxi Unit are pursuing all available leads to identify and apprehend those responsible, while forensic experts are processing the crime scene and gathering evidence as part of the ongoing investigation," said Traut.

He added that additional police deployments had been dispatched to the area to heighten security and maintain stability.

"The motive for the attack forms part of the police investigation."

The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) Western Cape has meanwhile appealed for calm following the deadly incident.

In a statement, the organisation strongly condemned the violence and called on law enforcement agencies to act swiftly to bring those responsible to justice.

"Santaco Western Cape is aware of the fatal shooting incident that took place in Hazeldene on 2 June 2026. We strongly condemn all forms of violence, intimidation and lawlessness," the organisation said.

The taxi body cautioned against speculation while investigations remain under way.

"The full circumstances surrounding the incident remain the subject of a law-enforcement investigation. It would therefore be inappropriate to speculate on the motive, the individuals involved or the events that may have led to the shooting."

Santaco said it remained committed to promoting peace, stability and responsible conflict resolution within the taxi industry and would continue engaging operators and associations to ensure disputes are resolved through the appropriate channels.

The organisation also conveyed its condolences to the families of those killed and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

"Santaco Western Cape appeals for calm and remains committed to working with all relevant stakeholders to prevent further violence and restore public confidence."
