Six suspects aged between 17 and 24 have been arrested in connection with a gang-related murder in Freedom Square, Bloemfontein, following a swift operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Anti-Gang Unit (AGU).

Police said the arrest followed the registration of a murder case at Kopanong Police Station on Friday, at about 8 pm, after a violent confrontation between rival gangs, identified as the 'BTK' and 'Maroma'.

Investigations suggest the violence allegedly stemmed from retaliatory attacks after a member of the Maroma gang was allegedly stabbed and hospitalised during an earlier clash with the BTK gang.

Police received a tip-off on Saturday, at around 10 am, which led to a coordinated operation across several residential areas in Phase 5 and the Sonskyn policing precinct.

"Through rigorous community engagement and intensive interviews on the crime scene, the team gathered vital information," said the police.

The operation resulted in the arrest of the six suspects, while possible murder weapons and blood-stained clothing were also recovered.

The Local Criminal Record Centre assisted investigators in processing the crime scenes and securing forensic evidence.

Investigations are continuing, with police indicating that further arrests remain possible. The suspects are expected to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on murder charges.
