A disturbing video circulating widely on social media has highlighted the dangers faced by e-hailing drivers in Cape Town, after footage emerged showing an e-hailing driver being robbed at gunpoint.

The two-minute clip captures the moments leading up to the robbery, as the driver unknowingly transports two passengers. One passenger is seated in the front, while another figure can be seen  in the back seat.

At the start of the video, the driver engages casually with the front passenger, asking whether he should turn. The passenger calmly instructs him to continue driving straight. About 22 seconds into the clip, the front passenger appears relaxed, chatting on his phone and scanning the surroundings.

He then asks the driver his name. “Abubakr,” the driver responds. The passenger comments on the “lekker number” playing in the car and increases the volume, revealing the song Work From Home by Fifth Harmony.

However, the mood quickly shifts.

Roughly halfway into the video, the front passenger signals to the man seated in the back. The second suspect then pulls out a firearm and presses it against the driver’s neck.

“Moenie skietie… moet nie skiet nie,” the front passenger said, repeatedly telling his accomplice not to shoot.

He then orders the driver to remove his hands from the steering wheel and begins robbing him of his cellphone and cash. The suspect issues a chilling threat: “As ek nou hier uit klim gaan ek jou vrek skiet, haal alles uit.”

The visibly shaken driver pleads with the suspects, insisting that he has nothing more to give. “You can search me, I can put on the light,” he says.

The front passenger then forces the driver to unlock his password-protected phone and reveal his PIN. After taking the driver’s belongings, both suspects exit the vehicle, instructing him to leave the scene.

The video has sparked widespread reaction online, with many social media users describing the incident as deeply traumatising. Others expressed relief that the driver was not physically harmed.

Police have since confirmed that a case has been opened.

Western Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said Grassy Park police registered a robbery with a firearm case following the incident.

The robbery took place on Saturday night, 25 April 2026, at approximately 20:47 in Pers Road, Parkwood.

“According to reports, the driver responded to a pick-up request and upon arrival at the mentioned address, two unknown males got into the vehicle. The one male took out a firearm and they robbed the victim before fleeing the scene,” Twigg confirmed.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and no arrests have yet been made.

Authorities have appealed to anyone with information to come forward. Members of the public can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS mobile application anonymously.
