Police operation in Delft leads to grenade seizure and multiple arrestse seized in Delft

POLICE and their military backup have busted a Delft man in possession of explosives, including a hand grenade.

Operation Prosper, the joint task force of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), arrested the man during an intelligence-led operation in the early hours of Thursday morning at the Freedom Farm informal settlement in Delft.

According to police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk, two firearms, ammunition and the M26 hand grenade were found buried at a burnt-out shack.. 

A 35-year-old suspect was arrested for the illegal possession of explosives, as well as firearms and ammunition.

The operation also resulted in the arrest of multiple suspects. A 23-year-old suspect was arrested after two 9mm firearms and ammunition were discovered.

Van Wyk added that in a separate search, a 36-year-old male was arrested after tik was found weggesteek beneath a carpet in a shack.

Van Wyk reported: “All suspects have been detained, and the recovered exhibits have been handed in for further processing.

“The suspects are expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court on their respective charges once charged.”

He added: “Operation Prosper represents a coordinated and decisive response by law enforcement and defence structures to disrupt criminal activity, remove illegal firearms from circulation and reinforce a safer environment for residents.”
