The Fire and Rescue Service responded to an alert of persons stuck in a void in a canal in the Pinelands area

A specialist team of elite Rope Rescue Technicians performed a daring extraction on Sunday, 19 April 2026, saving two people from a rapidly flooding canal void in the Pinelands area. The operation marks the third high-stakes technical rescue in the city in just four weeks.
The emergency unfolded as water levels in the canal began to surge following recent inclement weather. An adult male and female became trapped within a void section of the canal, unable to climb to safety as the current intensified.
Fire and Rescue Service crews arrived on the scene to find a precarious situation. Firefighters immediately established a rope rigging system, and positioned ladders for an emergency extraction. Working in tandem with Metro Rescue teams—who donned harnesses and wetsuits to enter the rising water—the technicians managed to reach the trapped pair and pull them to safety.
Both individuals were treated on-site for hypothermia before being transported to a local hospital for further care.
JP Smith, Mayco member for Safety and Security, praised the unit’s proficiency and said that these specialised firefighters are increasingly becoming the city’s last line of defence in unconventional emergencies. He noted that this assist was the third incident in just four weeks where rope rescue technicians were involved, highlighting the critical need for such services and the pride felt in being able to call on such a resource in times of trouble.
The unit’s recent track record includes the rescue of a woman from a drain in Bonteheuwel and the successful recovery of a dog named Sable in Durbanville. Smith also pointed to a major Hazmat response in Montague Gardens earlier this year as evidence of the city's significant investment in public safety infrastructure.
While the rescue stole the headlines, the City’s enforcement agencies reported a busy week of operations, despite a 30% drop in emergency calls due to the weather. Total arrests reached 449 suspects, while traffic services recorded 79,616 offences and impounded 195 public transport vehicles. Notably, 43 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre managed 1,004 calls over the period, including assistance for 38 assaults, 17 domestic violence cases, and 11 shooting incidents.
Rope Rescue Technicians remain on high alert as the city continues to navigate unpredictable weather patterns. These firefighters undergo rigorous training in high-angle, low-angle, and confined-space rigging to ensure that when the call comes, no void is too deep and no wall too high to reach those in need.
