The Worcester Regional Court has sentenced Willem Olivier and Kelvin Vlok to 42 years direct imprisonment each, while a third accused, a 20-year-old who was a minor at the time, received 15 years direct imprisonment for the gruesome murder of 77-year-old Christina Walters at her Papkuil Farm in Ceres.

All three have been declared unfit to possess firearms.

The State charged Olivier, 52, Vlok, 24, and the minor with murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, illegal possession of firearms, and illegal possession of ammunition.

According to court documents, the attack occurred on 4 March 2023. Olivier allegedly invited Vlok and the minor to Papkuil Farm under the pretext of resolving a wage dispute with Walters. Upon arrival, Olivier asked Walters for two cigarettes.

When she returned, the three accused grabbed her, dragged her outside, and tied a belt and barbed wire around her hands and neck. She was repeatedly kicked while lying on the ground.

Olivier instructed Vlok to enter the house and steal valuables. Vlok returned with groceries, alcohol, a cellphone, and four firearms with ammunition. The trio then took turns shooting at Walters before fleeing the farm.

After the murder, Vlok and the minor hid the firearms and ammunition in a nearby field using a donkey cart, while Olivier took the stolen items to his residence at Klein Papkuil Farm.

Police tracked down the accused following intelligence leads. All three cooperated, revealing the location of the hidden weapons. The minor confessed to the crimes, and the trio entered a plea and sentencing agreement with the State.

The Worcester Regional Court sentenced them as follows:

Willem Olivier and Kelvin Vlok: 30 years for murder; 12 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances; 10 years for illegal possession of a firearm (to run concurrently with the murder sentence); 10 years for illegal possession of ammunition (to run concurrently with the murder sentence)

20-year-old co-accused (under Section 71, Child Justice Act): 20 years for murder, with 5 years suspended on condition of no violent offenses during suspension;10 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances; five years for illegal possession of a firearm (concurrent with murder); and  five years for illegal possession of ammunition (concurrent with the  murder sentence).

Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Nicolette Bell, commended acting regional court prosecutor Amisha Ratanjie and investigating officer Warrant Officer Van Wyk.

“Criminals who mercilessly attack an elderly person in their home and shoot at them do not become repentant overnight. The accused pleaded guilty because the evidence was overwhelming. Such acts of violence can never be justified. We hope the family finds some solace knowing the perpetrators will spend a long time in prison.”
