In a heartbreaking incident, a young man lost his life in what appears to have been a tragic drowning accident at De Villiers Dam near Constantia Nek on Sunday, 1 February. The 20-year-old from Plumstead, who was reportedly swimming in shallow waters, was confirmed deceased following extensive rescue efforts by the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and other emergency services.
The alarm was raised at 12:46 PM when Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services alerted the NSRI Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) to reports of a drowning in progress at the dam. Quick to respond, teams from NSRI Hout Bay, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, the South African Police Service (SAPS), Western Cape Government Health EMS, and Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) rangers mobilised to the scene.
Upon arrival, NSRI rescue swimmers commenced a search in the dam, guided by friends of the victim who informed rescuers of where he had last been seen. Unfortunately, as efforts continued, the situation necessitated the involvement of police divers, who later located and recovered the young man's body from beneath the water.
Despite the prompt action by all involved, paramedics declared the man deceased at the scene. In the aftermath of this tragedy, the police have opened an Inquest docket to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
Chris Westcott, coxswain of NSRI Hout Bay, praised the swift and cooperative response from all emergency teams, including TMNP rangers and police divers. This collaboration was crucial given the remote location of the incident, highlighting the importance of teamwork in emergency situations.
As the community mourns this untimely loss, heartfelt condolences are extended to the family and friends of the deceased. This tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with water activities and underscores the necessity for caution when enjoying South Africa's beautiful yet unpredictable natural landscapes.
