Unity On The Square (UOTS) is set to return to Greenmarket Square on 16 December, marking its fifth edition since being launched in 2021.
The event features a line-up that includes Loukmaan and Emo Adams, Mafikizolo, Keanu Harker, Verd, Mujahid George and Faghrie Isaacs, who are expected to perform on the day.
This year’s festival will pay tribute to Cape Town performer Loukmaan Adams, who turned 50 in September.
While fans called for a birthday concert, Adams and his wife and business partner, Shaakirah Adams, opted to centre the celebration
around a public community event focused on music, culture and shared experiences.
“Reaching 50 years and reflecting on over four decades in the arts, it’s amazing to see young talent, women, and communities sharing the stage, telling their stories, and creating opportunities,” Adams said.
Unity On The Square was founded in 2021 and has developed into an established urban cultural event, attracting families and audiences from across the city.
Organisers say the aim of the event is to create a safe, inclusive space that showcases Cape Town’s creative industries.
Organisers have described this year’s programme as featuring performers who have worked with Adams across his career, with a mix of live music, dance and cultural performances planned.
Food trucks will be available on site, offering a variety of local food options for attendees.
Commenting on the event, JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, said the City of Cape Town has supported the initiative over the past four years, describing it as a platform that supports local entertainers and entrepreneurs and promotes social cohesion during the Day of Reconciliation.
In 2024, the event created 305 jobs for performers, technical crews, vendors and support staff, according to organisers.
“Unity On The Square is more than a concert,” said Shaakirah Adams, project director.
“It’s a celebration of community and creativity. Every year, we see lives change whether it’s a young performer getting their first paid gig, a vendor growing their business, or families enjoying a safe and unforgettable day together.”
The event will be held at Greenmarket Square. Tickets are available on Quicket.
Gates open at 3pm, and children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
Patrons have been encouraged to bring small educational gifts, such as books or stationery, which will be donated to an Early Childhood Development centre after the festival.
