After the big success of the  much-anticipated Cape Town switch-on of the festive lights, festivities continued in Langa with their own switching-on of the lights celebrations, where large crowds gathered along King Langalibalele Drive and Church Street.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis  will also light up the streets in Mitchells Plain on Friday, with a stellar artist line-up waiting to be heard, this includes comedian Wayne Mckay, DJ Chello, Ricky Vanni frontline and much more.

This comes after residents enjoyed an evening of music, food stalls and community celebration as the festive lights were officially switched on in Langa on Tuesday.

Next, Mitchell’s Plain will host its long-awaited switch-on event on Friday, 5 December, with thousands expected to attend.

The celebration returning after a 10-year hiatus will run from 4pm to 9pm on Morgenster Road in front of Westridge Garden, between De Duin Avenue and Victory Drive.

The Mitchell’s Plain festive lights were first launched in 2006, and this year’s revival comes ahead of the area’s milestone 50th anniversary in 2026.

Western Cape MEC for Arts and Culture, Ricardo Mackenzie, welcomed the festival’s return, saying it signals a renewed investment in the cultural identity of the area.

“We welcome the return of the Mitchell’s Plain festival lights with great enthusiasm. This festival is a vital celebration of community, identity, and the vibrant cultural spirit that defines Mitchell’s Plain. As we look ahead to 2026, we are actively planning culturally aligned programmes that will deepen this spirit and broaden opportunities for local talent, entrepreneurs, and families. Bringing the festival back is an important step toward that future.”

Road closures in Mitchell’s Plain will take effect from 9am on Friday, 5 December, with Morgenster Road closed between Dagbreek and De Duin avenues until midnight.
