The family of Angelo “Elo Rasta” Adams, was cut in half when an out of control BMW crashed into him spoke for the first time about the night that changed their lives forever.

The 34-year-old father of four was killed in a horrific hit-and-run on the corner of Eisleben and Snapdragon Roads in Mitchells Plain last week.

According to police reports the driver of a BMW drove on the wrong side of the road and collided with Adams.

The driver of the BMW crashed into four other vehicles injuring the drivers and their passengers which include children.

The injured victims including the driver of the BMW were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Police confirmed that Lentegeur police registered culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving cases for investigation and an arrest is yet to be made.

According to his family Adams was known for his warmth and generosity and was the breadwinner of the family. He leaves behind four children and a devastated mother, Sarah Adams, who is now appealing to the community for help with the children’s clothing and school necessities in the new year.

In an emotional interview, Sarah spoke of her heartbreak over her son’s sudden death and the absence of any apology from the driver or the driver’s family.

According to Sarah, someone who allegedly knew the driver was seen in a nearby shop and reported that the family had spoken about helping with funeral arrangements but nothing materialised.

“They didn’t say sorry,” Sarah said, her voice breaking.

“Not one word. My grandchildren lost their father, and all we want is answers. We need someone to take responsibility.”

Rumours have circulated suggesting the driver may have fallen ill behind the wheel or experienced an epileptic seizure when he struck Angelo who was waiting for transport to clock in for the night shift at the Docks.

“I want the truth,” she said. “Did he really fall sick while driving? Was it an epileptic fit? We don’t know, but we deserve answers, because my child was on his way to work to put bread on the table for us, now he is just gone. There has to be accountability.”

Sarah said what upset her even more is that Angelo’s girlfriend's cellphone, his speaker box and shoes were stolen while he laid there…dead.

“Who does that? Don’t people have a heart? Our community really needs to become more sensitive, even the photo’s and videos they are sharing…why? Do you know how this hurts us even more as a family? What about his children who have to see pictures like that?

“All we want is to bury Angelo…say our last goodbyes to him. I cant question God because the very same day Angelo’s date of birth was written in the book of life, his name was written for him to return to God, but I want to know from the driver what happened, and I want a sorry, and I want him and his family to commit to providing for the kids because the driver took away their father, the one who provided for them.”

Angelo’s aunt, Monica Booysen, also spoke of the loss.

“He was very kind, very friendly, very lovely,” she said. “He always asked if anyone needed something, if they needed help, he would be there. He has so much respect for the elderly, he would call them aunty and uncle, even if he didnt know them. “He always cared for his family, and now everything has changed.”

Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk said  that the matter is still under investigation.

“There are no new developments to report at this stage.”
