Success can be unforgiving. When winning becomes routine, any pause in momentum feels like a warning sign. For Mamelodi Sundowns, Monnapule Saleng’s move represents more than just another signing; it is a search for inspiration, a spark to reignite the fluency that once made their dominance feel inevitable.

Sundowns’ sustained excellence over the years has set standards so high that even the slightest dip is amplified. Sitting just two points behind Orlando Pirates — who still have a game in hand — has placed the reigning champions under unexpected scrutiny, despite remaining firmly in the hunt for both the league title and the Caf Champions League.

This season has been among the most demanding starts Sundowns have faced in recent memory. While little has been lost in the broader title picture, performances have lacked their customary authority and rhythm. A significant part of that can be traced back to the departure of Lucas Ribeiro Costa at the start of the campaign.

His exit removed a key creative presence — a player who seamlessly linked midfield and attack while also contributing goals, a fact underscored by his Player of the Season accolade.

Without drawing direct comparisons, it perhaps explains why the acquisition of Saleng feels so calculated. He brings qualities that Sundowns have been missing, particularly on the right flank, where the 27-year-old excelled during his time at Pirates.

Frequently a thorn in Sundowns’ side in past encounters, Saleng now arrives as a solution rather than a problem. His ability to create from wide areas, take on defenders, and deliver in dead-ball situations offers the Brazilians a different attacking dimension.

In a season that has already produced five draws, greater invention and decisiveness in the final third could easily have altered the complexion of their campaign. It has not merely been the number of drawn matches, but the manner in which Sundowns have dropped points that has stood out.

A lack of conviction and cutting edge has crept into performances, and in a title race likely to be decided by fine margins, a forward-thinking player with Saleng’s expressive style could be the difference between stagnation and momentum.

Fresh from a loan spell at Orbit College, Saleng arrives with valuable match sharpness, having recorded two goals and three assists in the top flight this season. While his true test begins now, he steps into a squad rich in quality — one that should provide him with greater opportunities to express himself, something that was often limited during his time in Rustenburg.

A potentially defining moment of the season could come when Sundowns travel to Orlando Stadium. With weeks still to pass before that encounter, Saleng may yet return to face his former club in a clash loaded with consequence.

A reception from the Esgodini faithful — unlikely to have softened towards the decision to sell one of their favourites — would only add further edge to a fixture that could have a direct bearing on the title race.

With 70 appearances, 25 goals and 17 assists for Pirates, Saleng arrives as a proven contributor. Capable of operating on either flank, his versatility and attacking intelligence make him a significant addition. He may not be the sole answer, but he could be the missing creative spark — the final puzzle piece that allows Sundowns to rediscover their rhythm and steer the season back in their favour.
