Fatal train incident at Wynberg Station leaves commuters in shock
A man in his 40s died after jumping in front of a train at Wynberg Station on Saturday, an incident caught on video and now under police inquest.

A man in his forties has died after jumping in front of a moving train at Wynberg Station on Saturday. An incident captured on video that has since gone viral, leaving commuters traumatised.
The train had left Claremont at around 10.20am and was approaching Wynberg when it came to a sudden stop. Passengers later learned the reason for the halt was a man who had entered the tracks moments before impact.
Wynberg police confirmed the incident and opened an inquest.
Captain FC van Wyk said: “According to reports a male in his 40’s (unknown name and address) jumped in front of a train. He was struck by the train and sustained critical injuries. The medical services were summoned, and he was transported to a nearby hospital. However, en route, he passed away.”
PRASA Western Cape spokesperson Zinobulani Mihi said the agency was aware of the fatality and that investigations were underway.
“PRASA Western Cape is aware of Saturday's tragic incident at Wynberg station, which is currently under investigation. No foul play is suspected based on preliminary information received by our security personnel at the station,” Mihi said.
Mihi urged the public to take rail safety seriously and follow all warnings in operational areas.
“We advise customers or community members to observe safety notices/alerts at the stations and adhere to them, as our stations are operational areas.”
Mihi added that the region runs continuous safety awareness efforts, including campaigns at stations, on trains, in schools, malls and online with partners such as SAPS, Transnet, the Railway Safety Regulator, the City’s law enforcement units, and provincial and district authorities.
Authorities have not yet identified the deceased.
