Investigation launched after daylight shooting claims life of young man in Bo-Kaap

A young man was shot dead in broad daylight in Bo-Kaap, Cape Town, on Monday.

Shots rang out after 1pm in the blocks of flats on Astana Street above the city. Multiple videos of the crime scene were shared on the internet, showing a young man lying in a pool of blood.

Sources from Cape Argus' sister publication, Daily Voice, shared that the 22-year-old deceased is from Kensington.

While the scene was being processed by police and forensics, three firearm magazines were found lying next to the deceased.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said Cape Town Central police responded to a complaint of a shooting in Astana Street, Bo-Kaap.

Twigg confirmed: “At about 1.30pm, and upon arrival on the scene they [police] found the body of a 22-year-old male who sustained gunshot wounds.

“According to reports the victim was approached by an unknown suspect/s who opened fire on him before fleeing the scene.

“The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.”

Cape Town Central detectives are investigating a murder case.

Local ward councillor Francine Higham was contacted for comment on the incident, but did not respond before publishing.
