The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) said it could not confirm whether any learners were inside a school transport vehicle which was hijacked in Silversands recently.

The video shows a black Hyundai hatchback stopping in front of the Quantum in the early hours of November 21 2025. Four masked gunmen jump out,  open the doors and force the driver out before fleeing with the vehicle. No passengers are visible in the footage.

Fight Against Crime SA (FACSA) said the hijacking occurred at about 8:12am. In its Facebook post, the organisation said: “Reports were received this morning that one scholar taxi (White Toyota Quantum) was hijacked in the Silversands area. The learners were confirmed safe immediately. The vehicle was recovered shortly after the initial report.”

However, the Western Cape Education Department said it could not verify whether learners were inside. WCED spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said: “The WCED is aware of a video circulating that shows a hijacking of a private transport vehicle. It is said that learners were inside but were released unharmed. (We cannot confirm this) We do not have further details at this stage. This was not a WCED learner transport vehicle – there has been no reports to district.”

FACSA said the children were later reunited with their parents and confirmed the Quantum had been recovered in an update posted at 12:47pm.

SAPS spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said police were still sourcing details. “Kindly be advised that your enquiry was sent to the relevant station to source the information, once we receive the information this office will revert to you,” he said.
