From its earliest days in 1857, under the influence of its co-founder, Saul Solomon, the Cape Argus advocated for multi-racial democracy, women's rights, and local self-governance. This commitment to progressive ideals continued throughout the apartheid era, during which the paper served as a prominent voice of opposition against the National Party.
