Cape Town - A female police officer stationed in Athlone is facing disciplinary action and criminal charges after she and her boyfriend, believed to be a member of the 28's gang, was allegedly found in possession of Mandrax and ammunition.

The 26-year-old woman and 25-year-old man are expected to make an appearance soon at the Paarl Magistrate's Court on charges of possession of drugs and the unlawful possession of ammunition.

The arrest follows a search warrant which was conducted at a residence in Klein Nederburg Street in Paarl where police found a small amount of Mandrax and one round of 9mm ammunition.

Police then discovered that the woman inside the residence was in fact a constable stationed at Athlone Police Station.

Police spokesperson, Joseph Swarbooi explained: “The circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation.

“Paarl East Police executed a search warrant on November 27 2024. Upon their arrival at the identified address in Magnolia Street in Klein Nederburg at around 7.25am, they entered the premises, searched the occupants which resulted in the confiscation of ammunition and a small quantity of drugs.

“They detained a 25-year-old man and a 26-year-old female.

“It was later determined that the 26-year old is deployed as a constable at Athlone SAPS who initiated a disciplinary investigation which will run concurrently with the criminal investigation.

“Paarl East Police are investigating cases of possession of drugs as well as the unlawful possession of ammunition.

“Once charged, the suspects are expected to make a court appearance in the Paarl Magistrates' court on the mentioned charges.”

Crime activist and whistle blower, Zona Morton said the same action should be taken with drug dealers.

“This arrest was personal and the so-called Crime Intelligence Driven Operations of CI cannot track and arrest drug kingpins.

“This female police officer is a victim of the circumstances perpetrated by crime intelligence who want to justify their existence.”
