McDonald’s South Africa has secured its popular spot in Green Point, right next door to Cape Town Stadium, at a rental of R420 000 a month.
The property was originally leased to Flying High Restaurants (Pty) Ltd where Seagulls Restaurant was located.
In 2000, when the restaurant went into liquidation, the lease was given to Newinvest 12 (Pty) Ltd which exercised options for the lease to be renewed.
The lease was later taken over by McDonald’s, operating as a 24-hour fast food outlet.
Tshepiso Molefi, the PR for McDonald’s, confirmed that the lease had been extended and that the food chain company was growing across the country, with 400 restaurants.
The lease follows a bidding war between McDonald’s and KFC during an auction by High Street Auctions last month, with McDonald’s winning the bid when the hammer fell.
“McDonald’s South Africa is excited to renew our lease agreement in Cape Town Green Point,” said Molefi.
“We have been part of that community for over 20 years and look forward to many more years ahead.
“As we approach our 400th restaurant, and our 29th year in South Africa, we are proud of the food we serve to millions of customers every month.
“We pride ourselves in choosing the most appropriate locations around the country, so that we are a landmark beacon in the communities we serve.
“We are proud of our crew that operate our restaurants every day and deliver happy memories for our customers. At any time, McDonald’s SA is happy to engage on broader issues pertaining to our 30-year journey here in South Africa, our brand and our future vision.”
Jane Meyer, the spokesperson for Mouille Point Ratepayers’ Association, said it welcomed McDonald’s renewing the lease again. “It (the auction) was a fair process – it was widely advertised so anyone who would have wanted to participate could have participated. As with all auctions, the lease of the property went to the highest bidder.”
Property influencer Ash Müller also took to her X account to air her views about the sale and said the fast food giants were here to stay.
“The McDonalds in Green Point, Cape Town, has recently renewed their lease at a rental of R420 000 per month,” she said.
“The iconic 24hr McDonald’s drive-thru site has a lease agreement with the City of Cape Town. The property lease recently went onto auction with an excitingly tight bidding war between McDonald’s and KFC.
“Both brands took part at the auction in an attempt to secure this forever-popular location right at the DHL Stadium’s doorstep.
“This stadium seats 55 000 people and will host the Springboks vs New Zealand rugby match in September this year.
“McDonald’s ended up successfully winning the auction. Their closing bid was R420 000 per month - which is the new monthly rental that they will be paying to keep their site.”
