The past few years have been a showcase of the country’s unique music culture, giving meteoric rise to local talents who have continued to etch their names solidly in the music industry.
Eager to also make a name for himself is budding singer-songwriter Litha Jamal Mdwaba, fondly known as Nu Edison, who introduced himself to the music scene with a purpose-driven intent to spread light and share his heartfelt stories that will relate to those receiving his music.
The star discovered his knack for music when he was 17-years old after discovering that he could write music, and during the Covid-19 pandemic, he took a bold step to make music, showcasing his artistry on songs such as “Bloom”, “Light Spirit”, “Dawn”, and “Ignite”, among many others.
Mdwaba, whose music is characterised by its distinctive style which combines contemporary hip hop and urban music with African soul, has joined a distinguished group of talented musicians who hope to inspire remarkable tales of how they discovered their gift for music.
“I am a purpose-driven artist. And as Nu Edison, my purpose is to spread light. My purpose is to share my stories and relate to people and encourage people to find their inner light. And as much as you locate your inner light, you have to understand that it will require a lot of healing and basically understanding that not every day is going to be a good day, but there is always gratitude in this life.
“And it will always come from being authentic; you gotta just be your true self throughout. Because I know how it feels first-hand not being my true self. I grew up trying to be different versions of people because I wanted to be accepted, but all it did was turn me into a monster.
“So when I found who Litha was, that is when I started speaking my truth, whether it is ugly or beautiful,” he adds.
With profound passion for music, he believes that the pathway to motivation is to share the music with others so they can connect in whichever way they see fit.
“My motivations have been spiritually-related, and there is also a lot of passion for music. I can’t really do anything without music. I breathe music every day. And I am always writing. I feel like it is a form of expression. It is like a meditative state for me. And what motivates me is that I really want to make this lucrative and provide and just have the kind of life that I would love to have.
“… And perform for people, and basically take it as far as I can take it on a global scale. I would like for people to connect with the music in any way they want to connect with it. And for me, the most important thing is being truthful about it and honest. What motivates me is to get the music to the people.”
September will see the release of another song, Mdwaba reveals, adding that there are more exciting things in the works, including collaborations and new songs.
