As the festive season draws near, families across South Africa are gearing up for joyous reunions and celebrations. However, the occasion also presents a challenge: managing alcohol consumption during these gatherings.

Meandrie Bridges, a psychological counsellor at the Journey Recovery and Wellness Centre, emphasises that alcohol abuse can disrupt even the most meticulously planned gatherings, leading to impaired judgement, emotional instability, and heightened conflict.

Such circumstances can result in risky behaviours, including driving under the influence (DUI). If these situations spiral out of control, they can inflict lasting emotional scars, such as trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Before and during the gathering

Bridges offers practical strategies for families to create a safe and enjoyable environment during the festive season:

Set Clear Expectations: Prior to the event, discuss boundaries and expectations with family members to ensure everyone is on the same page.

Designate a Sober Host/Champion: Select someone responsible for ensuring everyone’s safety while remaining sober throughout the event.

Plan Activities: Organise fun activities that do not involve substance use, such as games or outdoor adventures, to keep guests engaged and connected.

During the gathering

Once the festivities begin, vigilance is crucial:

Monitor Alcohol Use: Keep an eye on the amount of alcohol being consumed and intervene if needed to prevent escalation.

Offer a Variety of Non-Alcoholic Beverages: Providing delicious non-alcoholic options encourages guests to participate without relying on alcoholic drinks.

Watch for Signs of Impairment: Be alert for signs such as slurred speech, stumbling, or aggressive behaviour. Early intervention can prevent more serious situations.

Intervene Early: Should someone display signs of impairment, address the situation quickly, offering support where necessary to defuse potential crises.

She further underscores the importance of respecting established boundaries around alcohol while focusing on positive interactions, shared values, and family traditions to unify everyone.

Having the support of the matriarch or patriarch greatly enhances these efforts, as their influence typically garners wider compliance and makes sustainable solutions more attainable.
