The EFF in Gauteng blames the death of its regional deputy secretary Moshe Mphahlele on the private security company that was on the scene during the peaceful protest.
The party said the security company did not have any justification for using live ammunition, as the situation was calm and non-violent.
The Red Berets’ spokesperson, Dumisani Baleni, said it was alarming that this “reckless shooting” took place in the presence of state security agencies.
“It is infuriating and tragic that state security officials would delegate the responsibility of protecting our people during a peaceful protest to brutal private security companies, which have consistently demonstrated a disregard for human life.
“Fighter Moshe Mphahlele was a revolutionary ground force of the EFF, a dedicated community activist who committed his life to improving the living conditions of the people of Johannesburg and Alexandra.
“Those responsible for his tragic death must face the full force of the law,” Baleni added.
The party alluded that a teenager was also wounded and was currently in a critical condition in hospital.
“The incident occurred in Alexandra, Bramley, where fighter Mphahlele was engaged in a peaceful service delivery programme advocating for social housing for people in need.
“As a public representative councillor, fighter Mphahlele was mediating between the homeless community members and government officials to address the matter.
“During this peaceful engagement, fighter Mphahlele was fatally shot with live ammunition by reckless and irresponsible members of a security company.”
Meanwhile, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, told ‘The Star’ they were unable to respond as they were busy with their own investigation to establish what might have happened.
“The matter is currently under investigation by the SAPS, and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department is unable to comment while we ascertain the details of the incident to avoid any actions that could jeopardise the integrity of the case,” Fihla said.
Earlier, Council Speaker Margaret Arnolds described Mphahlele as a dedicated public servant whose life was tragically cut short in an incident that has left all shocked and deeply saddened.
Arnolds said the EFF leader’s untimely death involved the city’s metro police, adding that those involved were currently under investigation.
“It is imperative that a thorough and transparent investigation is conducted to ensure that justice is served, and that the truth is brought to light.
“The Speaker, together with the entire Council, extends sincere condolences to Cllr Mphahlele’s family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate this profound loss.
“Furthermore, the Speaker wishes to extend heartfelt sympathies and support to the EFF Caucus in the City of Johannesburg Council. Losing a colleague and a friend in such a manner is undoubtedly a profound and challenging experience,” the speaker said.
Arnolds emphasised the importance of council members and the entire broader community coming together, upholding the values of justice, and working towards a peaceful and respectful resolution.
“The loss of Cllr Mphahlele serves as a sombre reminder of the importance of our collective commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety and dignity of all individuals.
“May Cllr Moshe Mphahlele’s soul rest in peace, and may his memory inspire us all to strive for a just and equitable society.”
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, said a shooting occurred while “metro police and private security were removing people who had allegedly occupied containers in Bramley”.
“Police received information about a man who was shot and taken to the local clinic. Upon arrival at the clinic, police were shown the body of a man who had a gunshot wound.”
A murder inquiry has been opened. No arrests have been made.
