Checkers Sixty60 is expected to launch its new and improved version of the popular app this September. The improved version of the app will extend beyond grocery deliveries to include larger Hyper household goods, electronics and accessories, all delivered within a promised 60 minutes.

It is a bold move from the retail giants as they seek to enter new territory to deliver home merchandise and accessories, to compete with the likes of Takealot and Amazon delivery services.

The Sixty60 app has seen a success for the retail group, with 58% growth in sales between June 2023 to June 2024.

The delivery platform owned by Shoprite Holdings also expanded the numbers from which Sixty60 deliveries can be fulfilled to 539, an increase from 466 stores in 2023, an evidence of the increased demand for the award winning grocery delivery service.

“We’re confident that the next iteration of Sixty60 will again disrupt online retail in South Africa.

“Our precision delivery promise means no more waiting at home all day for your general merchandise order to arrive,” says Neil Schreuder, Chief of Strategy and Innovation for the Shoprite Group.

“Customers can now choose the 60-minute time slot in which they’d like their Hyper delivery to arrive, with the same to-the-minute driver tracking they have become accustomed to on their grocery orders”, adds Schreuder.

Need for speed

The success of Sixty60 has undoubtedly been hinged on its pursuit for fast deliveries and year-on-year, the product has been improving, getting faster.

In the 2022 financial year, the average Sixty60 delivery time was 42 minutes. This time was reduced by six minutes in 2023 to 36 minutes.

In 2024, the average Sixty60 delivery took just 33 minutes, with 94% of all orders being delivered within an hour.

Additionally, Shoprite Holdings said the popular app has created over 11,681 new jobs to support its digital ecosystem since the launch of the delivery platform.
