The Eiffel Tower, which attracts close to 7 million visitors annually, has been facing financial challenges.

According to the Paris Municipality, pandemic-induced tourism slump dealt a significant blow to its revenue streams and delays in maintenance and maintenance costs have surged.

This has resulted in a 20% increase in ticket prices to cover the ongoing maintenance costs of the 135-year-old structure.

Effective from August 1, 2024, visitors now pay €35 (approximately R678) to ascend the Eiffel Tower, up from the previous fee of €29,10 (about R564).

Commenting on this, Antionette Turner, General Manager at Flight Centre South Africa said that while the price increase might seem steep, it’s important to remember that the Eiffel Tower is more than just a tourist attraction – it’s a piece of living history that requires constant care and upkeep.

She said that despite the fee increase, the agency doesn’t anticipate a significant drop in interest from South African travellers.

“Paris remains a dream destination for many, and the Eiffel Tower is often at the top of their must-see list. The experience of standing atop this iconic structure and taking in the panoramic views of Paris is truly priceless,” she said.

Though ticket prices have increased, there are other ways to still enjoy Paris and the Eiffel Tower.

Budget-conscious travellers will be pleased to know that the price increase applies to tickets that include elevator access to the top and visitors can opt for cheaper tickets that only go to the second floor or even choose to climb the stairs for a more adventurous and budget-friendly experience.

However, for those seeking panoramic views of Paris without the hefty price tag of the Eiffel Tower, there are several excellent alternatives.

Under its vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from the First World War.

While entry costs €13, it’s less than half the price of the Eiffel Tower and offers spectacular views down the Champs-Élysées and beyond.

At 689 feet tall, the monolithic Tour Montparnasse, an office skyscraper in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, is as imposing today as when it was completed in 1973.

There is an old joke in Paris that the top of Montparnasse Tower has the prettiest view in the French capital.

Slightly pricier at €18, it is still more affordable than the Eiffel Tower, with the added bonus of having the Eiffel Tower in your panoramic view.
