One thousand children across schools in the Phoenix Central, Phoenix North, Verulam, and Tongaat circuits will receive new school shoes and lunch boxes, courtesy of the KwaZulu-Natal International Business Association (KIBA).

Led by former parliamentarian Omie Singh, the association made up of businesspeople has been at the forefront of helping communities in need, as part of its social responsibility.

“As part of our unwavering commitment to supporting the youth and fostering a brighter future, KIBA is proud to distribute one thousand pairs of school shoes and one thousand lunch boxes to underprivileged children,” said Singh.

He said while they were a business organization, their members go beyond profit-making to contribute meaningfully to society through various sponsorships.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to all our members and supporters who continuously step up to make projects like this possible. Together, we are not just building businesses but fostering a culture of care and compassion in our communities. We are immensely grateful for their dedication and generosity,” said Singh.

He said the Back to School shoe drive initiative was sentimental for him.

“I understand the struggles of children who lack basic necessities because I, too, experienced this as a young child. Growing up without the means to afford school shoes left a lasting impression on me. After spending twenty-five years serving as a Member of Parliament, I am determined to give back to the community that shaped me,“ said Singh.

The school shoes are intended for primary school boys and girls and were distributed to the beneficiaries in Phoenix today.

“Education is the foundation of opportunity, and by providing these resources, we aim to empower young minds and ensure they step into the school year with confidence and dignity,” said Singh.

The association in the recent past have assisted various communities including those affected by Covid - 19, 2021 rioting, the 2023 floods, water restricted communities and the tornado and disaster hit areas.
