Durban - A man arrested for being in possession of 13 explosive devices while travelling in a minibus taxi on the M4 near uMhlanga, has been remanded in custody until December 1.

Hlomohang Tenki, 22, appeared before the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday following his arrest on Tuesday.

He was arrested by the Hawks after police received information related to a suspect being in possession of commercial explosives.

According to Hawks spokesperson, Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo the man had boarded a taxi at the Phoenix taxi rank and was travelling to Durban central.

“The Hawks members from the Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation and eThekwini District Task Team arrested the suspect for contravention of (the) explosives act. The taxi was intercepted on the M41 and the suspect tried to escape but he was arrested. Commercial explosives were found in his bag. Investigations are ongoing,” said Mhlongo.

During court proceedings, the matter was remanded to December 1 for bail consideration, bail profiling, address verification as well as for Tenki’s citizenship to be ascertained. He will remain in custody at the Durban North police cells.
